Reporting To: Daily: Chargehand (Civil)

Weekly: Maintenance Manager (MM)

Generic description of duties

Conduct carpentry work on new projects or refurbishments, in residential buildings, workshops, stores or outdoors, working with power or manual tools within a specific area, each with specific components and discrete tasks.  Work requires the use of hand tools, power tools and light and heavy-duty equipment and vehicles.  Work as a team member or may perform tasks independently after receiving direction.  Receives daily assignments or work orders.  Guidance is available from the line manager for new or unusual situations.  Employees are expected to be fully competent in all aspects of work on given general guidance, can complete work assignments to the required standard.

Main duties:

  • Report to the relevant Chargehand and Maintenance Manager.
  • Uphold the DIO values and BATUK charter.
  • Conduct carpentry construction work, remodelling work with good workmanship, and producing specific method statements and risk assessments.
  • Use both power and manual tools.
  • Advise senior colleagues on alternative techniques or practices that would give better value for money, if required.
  • Basic set up and low-level maintenance and operate woodworking machines, such as lathes, drill presses, sanders, shapers, and planning machines, to perform woodworking operations.
  • Proficient at the following tasks: stain-grade trim work, hanging doors, drill and set door hardware, set windows.
  • Read and understand blueprints, technical drawings & utilise appropriate maths skills.
  • Reads and understand work order or receive instructions from Chargehand.
  • Erects scaffolding or sets up ladders to work above ground level. 
  • Maintains all equipment in a clean, safe, and serviceable condition.
  • Inspects, maintains, and correctly wears items of PPE specific to the task.
  • Always keep work site/workshop tidy especially at the end of each shift or working day.
  • Responsible for the use of materials and tools issued for the task including the safe storage and security, protection from the elements and being accountable for any unused materials, to be returned and signed back to stores.
  • Understands and carries out all requirements under Health and Safety for the task including reading, understanding and complying with the risk assessments and site safety orders.
  • Comply with relevant Regulations and Codes of Practice.
  • Undertakes other tasks as directed by Line Management.

Secondary duties:

  • Work is performed indoors and outside.  Outside work requires exposure to varying weather and terrain conditions, hazardous traffic conditions, noise, fumes, odours, and gases; exposure to moving equipment and occasional exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme heat, wet/humid conditions, high, open, or confined spaces, intermittent vibration, and noise.
  • Work requires frequent standing and walking and occasional bending, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, crawling, reaching, grasping, and lifting and/or moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Employees may be required (after sufficient training and experience) be required to carry out the duties of Asbestos competent person duties.
  • Employees are subject to call-back during emergencies on a 24-hour basis and are required to work occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays during special events.
  • Carry out any other duties commensurate with the trade/grade as directed by the MLM.
  • In accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1992, you have a duty to take reasonable care of your own health and safety and that of others that may be affected by your acts or omissions.  You are to cooperate with the Garrison Engineer’s Department so far as is necessary to enable the Garrison Engineer to comply with his duties under the Act.  It is a disciplinary offence if you intentionally, or recklessly, interfere with or misuse anything provided in the interests of health, safety, or welfare.
  • You should inform your line manager of any dangerous situations or shortcomings in the current health and safety arrangements.  BATUK’s Health and Safety Policy is laid down in Standing Orders, which you will be required to sign to say that you have read and understand the contents of the policy.

Competences/qualifications/experience:

  1. Essential:

      • Minimum of Trade test 1 in carpentry and joinery or woodwork course, with three years working experience.

      • Kenya Certificate of Secondary education (KCSE).

      • Be able to perform carpentry work on new projects or refurbishments, in residential buildings, workshops, stores or outdoors.

      • Working with power or manual tools within a specific area, each with specific components and discrete tasks.

      • Be aware of occupational hazards and utilise standard safety practices.

      • Be able to risk assess and mitigate as low as required when performing heavy manual works or working in unfavourable conditions.

      • Ability to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.

      • You understand your own role and that of others in the team and work together to achieve team goals.

      • You appreciate shared team goals and work with others to achieve Departmental aims.

      • You understand how your department is structured, where you fit in, and your role in delivering business results.

      • You set an example by working efficiently with as little supervision as possible.

      • Operate a variety of motorised and hand tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.

      • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

      • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all personnel.

      • Meet schedules and timelines.

      • Grade 1 Carpentry and Joinery qualification minimum.

      • Have a valid driving licence.

  2. Essential:

      • Hold valid Kenya driving License (Class B, C1 & C)

      • Able to efficiently use motorised and hand tools and equipment used in maintaining, repairing facilities particular to work area.

      • Understand occupational hazards and standard safety practices and procedures.

      • You willingly accept responsibility for your own work while keeping other people informed of progress and possible problems.

      • Understand the relevant UK, National and local laws, codes and regulations depending on work area.

      • You take opportunities to develop yourself by learning from others and taking on new challenges. 

      • Heavy equipment operating techniques.

      • Artisan and Craft Qualification.

      • Have carpentry work experience with DIO/BATUK.

Training Requirements:

    • Structure and Function of the British Army, Defence Estates and BATUK.

    • Inspection, assembly and use of scaffolding

    • Health and Safety at Work.

    • COSHH awareness.

    • Manual Handling.

    • Fire.

    • First Aid.

    • Equipment Care including Use and Maintenance. 

    • Confined Spaces, Working at Height, and Asbestos training.
