Generic description of duties

Employee’s primary role is to carry out electrical installation and maintenance tasks in accordance with the latest edition of BS 7671, IET Wiring Regulations. To perform initial and periodic inspection and testing of the domestic and industrial electrical installations within BATUK estate, including SSFAs. Work requires the use of hand tools, power tools and light and heavy-duty equipment and vehicles.  Works as a team member or may perform tasks independently after receiving direction.  Receives daily assignments or work orders from Chargehands. Guidance is available from Line Manager for new or unusual situations. Employees are expected to be fully competent in all aspects of a body of work on given general guidance and complete work assignments to the required standard.

Main duties:
  • Conduct minor domestic and industrial electrical installation work IAW the latest edition of BS7671, IET Wiring Regulations. 
  • Carryout routine inspections, maintenance and servicing of white goods and domestic and industrial electrical installations in accordance with the latest edition of BS7671, IET Wiring Regulations.
  • Review maintenance records to ensure that electrical infrastructure and equipment is still compliant.
  • Make safe defective appliances.
  • Operate and maintain test equipment.
  • Test the finished products, components, or assemblies for function, operation and accuracy to verify adherence to functional specifications.
  • Read and interpret simple data and other materials to determine, change, or measure specifications or inspection and test procedures.
  • Able to produce simple installation drawings, specifications, and materiel quantities.
  • Able to diagnose faults and carryout simple repairs to LV installations and equipment.
  • Able to identify, make safe and isolate faulty or dangerous installations and equipment using appropriate procedures in compliance with MOD Safety Rules and Procedures (SRPs).
  • Maintain a working knowledge and understanding of the Electrical Safety Rule Book as required by current SRPs.
  • Complete and pass biannual First Aid and annual Fire Training course.
  • Respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis; identifies and communicates needed repairs; directs repairs, may participate in making repairs and other duties as directed. This includes occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays during special events.
  • Maintain all equipment in a clean, safe and serviceable condition.
  • Inspect, maintain, and correctly wear items of PPE specific to the task.
  • Keep work site/workshop tidy at all times especially at the end of each shift or working day.
  • Responsible for the use of materials and tools issued for the task including the safe storage and security, protection from the elements and being accountable for unused materials returning to the store.
  • Understand and carry out all requirements under Health and Safety for the task including reading, understanding and complying with the risk assessments and site safety orders.
  • Understand customers’ and suppliers’ needs and explore practical solutions with them managing expectations by explaining what is and is not possible.
  • Uphold the DIO values and the BATUK charter.  
  • Perform related duties as required or assigned.
  • Undertaking and recording of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) activities pertinent to their role. 
Secondary duties:
  • Work is performed indoors and outside.  Outside work requires exposure to varying weather and terrain conditions, hazardous traffic conditions, noise, fumes, odours, and gases; exposure to moving equipment and occasional exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme heat, wet/humid conditions, high, open or confined spaces, intermittent vibration and noise. 
  • Work that requires frequent standing and walking and occasional bending, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, crawling, reaching, grasping and lifting and/or moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Employees may be required (after sufficient training and experience) to carry out the duties of Working at Height, Confined Spaces and Asbestos competent person duties.  
  • Carry out any other duties commensurate with the trade/grade as directed by the Military Line Management.
  • In accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1992, you have a duty to take reasonable care of your own health and safety and that of others that may be affected by your acts or omissions.  You are to cooperate with the Garrison Engineer’s Department so far as is necessary to enable the Garrison Engineer to comply with his duties under the Act.  It is a disciplinary offence if you intentionally, or recklessly, interfere with or misuse anything provided in the interests of health, safety or welfare.  You should inform line manager of any dangerous situations or shortcomings in the current health and safety arrangements.  BATUK’s Health and Safety Policy is laid down in Standing Orders, which you will be required to sign to say that you have read and understand the contents of the policy.

  • Training and mentoring of junior electricians and apprentices. Monitor their progress and provide encouragement and constructive feedback without apportioning blame. You ask for and act on feedback and respond constructively to criticism.
Competences/qualifications/experience:
  1. Essential:
    • Minimum of Trade Test 1 in Electrical, with minimum three years working experience. 

    • Kenya certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE)

    • Troubleshoot problems and resolve non-routine maintenance and repair issues.

    • Prepare and present verbal and written reports.

    • Interpret, apply and develop work procedures in accordance with relevant standards, policies, regulations and procedures.

    • Awareness of occupational hazards and utilize standard safety practices.

    • Ability to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis when on Duty Engineer periods.

    • Communicate effectively in English and Kiswahili both orally and in written.

    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all personnel.

  2. Desirable

    • Holds valid Kenya driving licence (Class B, C & C1).

    • Methods and techniques of maintenance, inspection, and emergency repair programs.

    • Use of motorised and hand tools and equipment in assigned work area.

    • Training to support modern technologies including PV panel and solar water heating installations in domestic applications.

    • Awareness of managing and working within the Big 6 Compliance areas (Gas, Fire, Asbestos, Legionella, Electrical & Fuels)

    • Training to support fire alarm installation programming in the BATUK estate.

    • Understand occupational hazards and standard safety practices and procedures.

    • Heavy equipment operating procedures.

    • Understanding of policies, functions and responsibilities, operations, and objectives of the Organisation.

    • Understanding of pertinent UK, National and local laws, codes and regulations including BS 7671, IET Wiring Regulations.

    • Understand the principles and practices of supervision and employee development.

    • Delivery of training and management of apprentices and junior electricians.

    • Structure and function of the British Army, Defence Estates, DIO and BATUK.
